It is essential that all smokers are identified as soon as possible on admission and that smokefree information and support is provided.

Very Brief Advice (3 A's) Ask, Advise, Act - All ward based clinical staff are expected to provide this.

Ask: 

•Smoking status and screen with the Carbon Monoxide (CO) Monitor Smokerlyzer)

Advise:

•The site is smokefree

•Smoking paraphernalia is not allowed or stored on the ward and should be returned home or will be disposed of

•Support is available – Nicotine Replacement Therapy or E-burn disposable electronic cigarette

Act:

•Offer 'emergency' Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) or E-burn e-cigarette within 30 minutes of admission.
